An oil on board by William Stewart MacGeorge RSA (1831-1961), signed bottom right, in a gilt wood frame ready to hang. The work is in great condition but could do with a light clean. I’m unsure of the location but an old label on the back reads ‘A Riverside Scene in Holland’, the artist was known to have spent some time in the Netherlands and Belgium and lived in Antwerp for three years as a young man.
William Stewart MacGeorge was a member of the Royal Scottish Academy and was born in Castle Douglas, Dumfries and Galloway, Scotland. To quote the Royal Scottish Academy website ‘For a long series of years he lived in Kirkcudbright in summer and in Edinburgh in winter. Most of his subjects were of Galloway, but he also painted in the Highlands, and in 1913 his works in the Academy were of Venice and Verona.’
Framed size 50.5 x 40.5 cm
