Stanislas Victor Eduard Lepine (1835-1892)
Banks of the Seine c.1880
Oil on Canvas (signed)
37 x 26 cm (canvas)
51 x 42 cm (frame)
Stanislas Lépine was a student of Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot and is considered a harbinger of Impressionism, heralding the evolution of traditional plein-air landscape painting into modern landscape painting.
This scene depicts workers on the banks of the Seine and is typical of his many riverside landscapes. I’m unsure of the exact location it could even be depicting Conflans -Sainte-Honorine or the Marne at Charenton. The barges and white work horse can be seen in many of his depictions of the seine. Signed lower right with a catalogue extract pasted on the frame. The canvas is housed in a walnut frame with gilt edges.
