Phil Rogers was a Welsh studio potter celebrated for his mastery of traditional stoneware and his influential role in contemporary ceramics. Originally trained as a painter, he discovered pottery in the 1970s and went on to establish his workshop in Rhayader, Mid-Wales, eventually building Marston Pottery at a restored 15th-century farmhouse. His work drew deeply from Korean, Japanese, and medieval European traditions, and he became widely respected for his ash glazes, salt glazing, and strong, functional forms. A dedicated teacher and author, Rogers published several seminal books — including Ash Glazes, Throwing Pots, and Salt Glazing — and led workshops around the world, mentoring generations of potters. His pieces are held in major international museum collections, and through both his craft and writing he left a lasting legacy as one of Britain’s leading studio potters.
