Marc Chagal was associated with the École de Paris, as well as several major artistic styles at the epicentre of European Modernism in the early 20th Century, namely Cubism, Symbolism, and Fauvism, yet his own unique style was anchored in his deep sense of mysticism and love of folklore drawing from his Russian Jewish heritage. In his work he created images of a long-gone world half real, half imagined, deeply spiritual. He drew upon many of these motifs throughout his career, from his early years in Paris, right up until his later architectural works, in stain glass and painted ceilings that took in commissions all around the world. Art critic Robert Hughes referred to Chagall as "the quintessential Jewish artist of the twentieth century".
Chagal created works in a wide range of artistic formats, including painting, drawings, book illustrations, stained glass, stage sets, ceramics, tapestries and fine art prints. This colour lithograph is taken from the 1960 publication ‘Dessins pour la Bible, Verve, revue artistique et littéraire," Vol. X No 37-38. It is in great condition housed in a glazed frame, the print sheet has two images as there is a black and white image to the reverse of the main colour print.
