Ian Henderson (b.1939)

‘Rejection of a New Town

Oil on Canvas

Signed and dated 1967

87 x 64 cm (frame)

This early work by Ian Henderson entitled ‘Rejection of the New Town’ (labelled verso) is ana example of the artist’s early work when he was based in the UK. A heavily abstracted peninsula projecting into the sea with a bold impasto sky in heavy luscious ivory and cream tones.

Ian Henderson trained at Banbury, Oxford and Swansea Colleges of Art. He received the Gulbenkian Fellowship in 1966 and later taught in the UK and Canada. His work focuses on portraiture and landscape, especially themes of place and human impact on the environment. Now based in the Adelaide Hills, Australia, he is well established in the Australian art scene, with work held in major public and private collections internationally. He has also written several autobiographical essays and continues to exhibit widely, including recent projects in Thailand and Australia.

Henderson’s work is primarily figurative, often incorporating abstract elements, particularly in his landscapes. In the UK his paintings are held in several public collections, including the Warwick University Art Collection, Worcester Art Gallery, and a number of university colleges.
