A great example of John Maltby studio pottery, a large stoneware square dish or platter with vibrant blue and red glazes, produced circa 1980, that reminds me of paintings my Miro and Kandinsky. Signed on the reverse and in excellent condition, with no signs of damage or repair, some acute firing flaws and light crazing are present but that is in keeping with ceramics of this type
John Maltby was a celebrated sculptor and ceramic artist in his lifetime and his works command strong prices on the art market, especially for the more standout and artistic examples of his work. Born in Cleethorpes, Lincolnshire he studied sculpture at Goldsmiths College in South London, he then worked with David Leach from 1962 at Lowerdown Pottery in Bovey Tracey, Devon where he was Leach's apprentice for nearly two years. His lifelong love of the sea and sailing inspired much of his artistic output as was the work of European abstract artists.
The piece measures 26.5 x 25.5 x 5cm and weighs 1.3kg
