Created in 1982 this etching was originally included within the deluxe copies of ‘Animals’ by W J Strachan published by Aurum Press Ltd and Bernard Jacobson Ltd. Titled ‘Tiger’ the etching is a compelling late-period work by Moore, executed with confident, economical line work. This piece is an artist proof, edition three of twenty, second state.
Although internationally renowned for his monumental reclining figures and public sculptures, Moore maintained a lifelong engagement with drawing and printmaking. In Tiger, his sculptural sensibility is evident: the form is built through contour and weight rather than surface detail, giving the animal a palpable three-dimensional presence within the flat plane of the paper.
Printed on fine art paper, the etching reflects Moore’s late-career exploration of natural and animal forms, themes that parallel his enduring fascination with organic structure, strength, and primal energy.
Artist Biography
Henry Moore (1898–1986) was one of the most influential sculptors of the 20th century and a leading figure in modern British art. Born in Castleford, Yorkshire and the son of a miner, Moore studied at the Leeds School of Art and later at the Royal College of Art in London. He rose to international prominence in the 1930s and became particularly celebrated after World War II for his monumental bronze sculptures placed in public spaces around the world.
Moore’s work is characterized by abstracted human forms, especially reclining figures and mother-and-child groupings, often pierced or hollowed to explore interior and exterior space. His artistic language drew inspiration from natural forms—bones, stones, shells—and from non-Western sculpture, blending abstraction with a profound sense of humanity.
In addition to sculpture, Moore was an accomplished draftsman and printmaker. His works on paper, including etchings and lithographs, demonstrate the same structural clarity and sensitivity to mass that define his sculpture. Today, his works are held in major museum collections worldwide, and his legacy is preserved through the Henry Moore Foundation in Hertfordshire, England.
