Eric James Mellon was a British artist best known for his contribution to post-war studio ceramics, while also maintaining a diverse and accomplished practice across painting, printmaking, and drawing. He trained at the Central School of Arts and Crafts in London, where he developed a strong grounding in form, colour, and material experimentation.
Although ceramics remained central to his reputation, Mellon’s artistic interests extended well beyond the kiln. His paintings and printed works reveal a confident, expressive approach, often informed by landscape and place. He lived and worked for many years in Bosham, West Sussex, a setting that provided enduring inspiration and featured prominently across his work in multiple media.
Mellon’s practice is characterised by a tactile sensitivity and a painterly use of colour, reflecting a consistent artistic vision regardless of medium. His work continues to be appreciated for its vitality, versatility, and the seamless way it moves between fine art and craft traditions.
