Rowbotham became a member of the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolours and succeeded his illustrious father as Professor of Drawing at the Royal Naval School. His watercolours depicting Italian and Scottish scenes are often found at auction, whereas his naval scenes are less common. This is a great example of his maritime landscape work, showing Upnor Castle and docks that during the 19^th Century was an important ordinance depot for the Royal Navy, and their supply of gunpowder, artillery shells and cordite.
