‘Sympathy’

 Watercolour on paper

21 x 19 cm

33 x 31cm (Frame)

A beautifully intimate and emotive study by one of Britain’s foremost early-20th-century watercolourists. In ‘Sympathy’, Lee-Hankey’s gentle palette and diffused light draw us into a moment of human kindness, rendered with remarkable sensitivity. Entitled Sympathy, we can only speculate at the situation that requires our compassion.

Born in Chester, Hankey trained at the Chester School of Art and the Royal College of Art, later working in Paris, where the influence of Jules Bastien-Lepage shaped his realistic yet sentimental depictions of rural life. He was known for his depictions of mothers with children as well as landscapes and character studies. The lightness of touch and instinctive deft application present in his watercolours has often been noted.
